1.North American Orchid Conservation Center participates the OCC & 1% FOC

North American Orchid Conservation CenterNorth American Orchid Conservation Center NAOCC is a coalition of organizations dedicated to conserving the diverse orchid heritage of the U.S. and Canada. Based at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, it also includes the National Zoological Park, the National Museum of Natural History, and Smithsonian Gardens. The U.S. Botanic Garden is the other founding partner. The initial group of public and private organizations that support NAOCC have joined forces with a common goal: to ensure the survival of native orchids for future generations. To this end, NAOCC’s collaborators are working to preserve habitats, create and maintain national collections of seeds and orchid mycorrhizal fungi, and support research on orchid ecology, conservation and restoration. An important goal of NAOCC is to provide the public with opportunities to join in the effort to conserve native orchids.

2. Fiona Stanley Hospital Terrestrial Orchid Site Conservation

Species Orchid Society of Western Australia was asked, by Warren McGrath and Anthony McEwen of Strategen, about rescuing some of the orchids from the site on which the Fiona Stanley Hospital was to be built. The Western Australian Government’s Environment Protection Authority wished to preserve some of the native vegetation for replanting on the site once the hospital was completed.

Recently some of the orchids were pulled up by gardeners as weeds. So there is will be education of gardeners and replanting of orchids, the frailty of conservation.

The Species Orchid Society of Western Australia was one of the first orchid societies to join back in 2005.

4. A reminder about 1% FOC donation for 2013 reporting, we are shooting for a wrap up date of March 2, 2013 (60 days after the start of the New Year). The date matters less than the donation. The donation goes to the orchid conservation organization or project of your choice.

To any orchid society that has a different fiscal year then the calendar year disregard the date. Yours would be 60 days after the close of your fiscal year. I believe there are two orchid societies that this concerns.

To those orchid societies that have already made a 2013 donation and have let me know, I thank you. It makes my job easier and makes the OCC function smoother.

All individual orchid society donation amounts and to whom are confidential. I add the donation totals together so we can gauge how we are doing as a whole.

Thank you for your support for orchid conservation,

Mark Sullivan

5. Proposed ‘Orchids in the Wild’ trip to Brazil to visit Reserva Serra Bonita, Chapada Diamantina, and Salvador, Bahia

oca logo March 14 - March 29, 2014 The OCA has recently invested in Reserva Serra Bonita, near Ilheus, Brazil, as part of our program to protect orchid habitat. Because interest in this reserve is high, we have designed a trip to visit there and to visit other orchid sites in the nearby region of Chapada Diamantina. Please click on the link to learn more and to view the proposed itinerary.
