1. The
Amherst Orchid Society is participating in 1% FOC
The
Amherst Orchid Society was founded in the early 1980's. As best as my
records show the formal meetings began in 1983 in the upper meeting
room of the Jones Library on Amity Street Amherst. The
society grew rapidly and we put on our first spring orchid show in late
1980's. It
opened in a surprise snowstorm but still managed to attract over 200
people. The Amherst Orchid Society has a Conservation officer.

Mike
May of Art for Orchids uses art to raise money, awareness, and
education for orchid conservation around the world.
"Orchids
are emblematic of the fragility of nature, and
through my paintings, I hope to reach out to raise awareness of how
much more needs to be done to protect species and the environments in
which they survive. I would like to see proceeds of my work going
directly into orchid conservation projects around the world."
Art
for Orchids
first project is:
Bosque das Orquídeas,
Florianόpolis,
Brazil
Introduction: This project is to create a unique
urban
resource, The
Bosque das Orquídeas, to raise local awareness of one of the richest
ecosystems on earth, the Mata Atlantica, or Atlantic Rainforest in
Brazil. The Atlantic
Rainforest
stretches from Rio Grande do
Norte to
Rio Grande do Sul, covering

4500
km along the coastal mountain range
called the Serra do Marda Sadly, 90% of the original 1.2
million km
2
has been lost and today less than 100,000 km
2 of
the forest remains.
Project
objectives: The
Bosque das Orquídeas or "Orchid Woodland"
will be created in a municipal park, the Bosque Vereador Pedro
Medeiros, a 2 ha
remnant of the Mata Atlantica located right in the heart of
Florianόpolis, the
capital of the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The
Bosque represents a unique window of
opportunity for local schools and volunteers to personally contribute
to
building a spirit of conservation & local knowledge of the
goals of
conservation programs elsewhere in the Mata Atlantica
Fundraising
& project implementation.
The minimum funds required to achieve
these objectives will be raised through donation of
proceeds from the sale of my watercolour of
Laelia purpurata
and a special limited edition of 150 giclee prints.

Reintroduction
of
native
orchids into the wild in El Valle, Panama (97
kb
pfd
file) This project is an instrumental part of our orchid conservation
strategy in El Valle. A widespread practice of wild orchid gathering
among local people has dramatically diminished native orchid
populations in this tiny Panamanian town and the surrounding
mountains. It is thus imperative to reintroduce these orchids into
the
wild so that this place will be a paradise for them again. In close
cooperation with the Institute of Agricultural Investigation of Panama
(Instituto de Investigación Agropecuaria de Panamá, IDIAP),
APROVACA
plans to reproduce eight native orchid species in its nurseries and
plant them in their original habitat. Once the reintroduction process
is completed, our rangers will try to
Eriopsis
biloba
prevent the exploitation of the
precious flowers from occurring again.
APROVACA has also added a gallery featuring over 200 pictures of
Panamanian orchids.

Orchid Show Conservation Displays
If Orchid Societies have a conservation information table or display at
their orchid show. Take a picture and send it to me. Also if you have
any suggestions you would like to share with other orchid societies in
putting together a orchid conservation display let me know.
This is a picture of the orchid conservation display at the spring
orchid show of the
Spokane
Orchid
Society. Good Job.
